A refined 1789 portrait by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, depicting the Comtesse de la Châtre in a relaxed, elegant pose.
Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun painted this portrait of Marie Charlotte Louise Perrette Aglaé Bontemps, the Comtesse de la Châtre, in 1789. The work captures the sitter in a moment of quiet repose, seated upon a green velvet sofa. She wears a simple white muslin dress, a style that gained popularity in late eighteenth-century France as a rejection of the rigid formality associated with the court of Versailles. A dark blue sash cinches her waist, providing a sharp contrast to the lightness of her gown.
The Comtesse wears a large hat adorned with dark ribbons, which frames her face and directs the viewer's attention to her direct, calm gaze. She holds a small book in her hands, suggesting an intellectual pursuit or a pause in reading. Vigée Le Brun employs a soft, naturalistic approach to the skin tones and fabric textures, demonstrating her technical skill in rendering the translucency of the muslin and the weight of the velvet upholstery. The background remains neutral and dark, ensuring the figure remains the primary focus of the composition.
This portrait reflects the shift in aristocratic portraiture toward a more relaxed and intimate presentation. Vigée Le Brun, who served as a court painter to Marie Antoinette, was known for her ability to balance the demands of her sitters for an idealised appearance with a sense of individual character. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to capture the fashion and social atmosphere of the period immediately preceding the French Revolution.
