A detailed fine art print of Diego Rivera's monumental fresco cycle at the Palacio Nacional, documenting the history of Mexico.
Diego Rivera painted this expansive mural cycle within the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City. The work occupies the walls of the main staircase, providing a visual chronicle of Mexican history from the pre-Columbian era through the Spanish conquest and into the post-revolutionary period. Rivera utilised the fresco technique, applying pigment directly onto wet lime plaster to ensure the colours became a permanent part of the architectural structure.
The composition is divided into distinct sections that follow the physical contours of the building. The left wall depicts the arrival of Spanish forces, showing the violent clash between European soldiers and indigenous populations. The central section moves through time, documenting the colonial period and the subsequent struggle for independence. The right side focuses on the social and political transformations of the early twentieth century, incorporating figures from the Mexican Revolution alongside depictions of industrialisation and agrarian reform.
Rivera employed a flattened perspective to manage the scale of the narrative, allowing viewers to read the history across the walls as they ascend the staircase. The figures are rendered with clear outlines and solid forms, a stylistic choice influenced by his study of Italian Renaissance frescoes and his interest in pre-Hispanic art. The palette consists of earthy tones, ochres, and deep reds, which ground the narrative within the physical space of the palace. By integrating these historical events into a public government building, Rivera created a permanent record of the national identity. This work remains a primary example of the muralist movement, which sought to make art accessible to the public while addressing the social and political realities of the nation.
