A landscape painting by Vasily Polenov, depicting a view of Constantinople. The work features a tall tree framing the city and waterway, with loose brushwork capturing light and atmosphere.
Vasily Polenov (1844-1919) was a Russian painter associated with the передвижники (Peredvizhniki, or "The Wanderers"), a group of Russian realist artists who formed as a protest against academic restrictions. Polenov is known for his landscapes and genre scenes, often infused with a sense of lyrical beauty and tranquility. He travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, which provided inspiration for his art. He taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he influenced a generation of Russian artists. This painting depicts a view of Constantinople (now Istanbul), likely painted during one of Polenov's travels. The scene is dominated by a tall, dark tree in the foreground, which frames the vista of the city and the waterway beyond. The buildings, with their red-tiled roofs, are clustered along the water's edge, while the distant hills fade into a soft, hazy blue. The water reflects the sky, creating a sense of light and atmosphere. The brushwork is loose and impressionistic, capturing the fleeting effects of light and shadow.
