A minimalist geometric composition by Bauhaus master László Moholy-Nagy, featuring precise lines and balanced forms.
László Moholy-Nagy was a central figure in the Bauhaus movement, known for his rigorous approach to form and space. This work, titled Construction, demonstrates his interest in the relationship between geometric elements and the white space of the paper. By stripping away representational subject matter, the artist focuses on the tension created by intersecting lines and shapes.
The composition relies on a vertical axis, anchored by a bold, dark line that bisects the frame. A delicate, thin arc provides a counterpoint to this rigidity, suggesting movement and volume without the use of traditional perspective. The inclusion of a solid black semi-circle and two horizontal bars introduces varying degrees of density and weight. These elements interact to create a sense of balance, where the negative space is as active as the printed marks themselves.
Moholy-Nagy viewed art as a means to explore the properties of light, space, and motion. His work often reflects a desire to integrate industrial aesthetics with fine art. This print is an example of his pursuit of clarity and precision. The lack of ornamentation allows the viewer to observe the interaction of basic geometric primitives. It is a study in economy of means, where every line and shape serves a specific purpose in the overall equilibrium of the image. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface is characteristic of his graphic output during his time at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This piece remains a clear example of the Constructivist ethos, prioritising structural logic over emotional expression.
