A refined ink study of a cormorant by Xu Beihong, showcasing his mastery of traditional brushwork and modern anatomical observation.
Xu Beihong remains a central figure in twentieth-century Chinese art, known for his ability to synthesise traditional ink techniques with Western anatomical precision. This study of a cormorant demonstrates his mastery of the brush, where the economy of line conveys both the physical weight and the character of the bird. The dark, saturated ink washes define the plumage, while the lighter, controlled strokes of the beak and feet provide a necessary balance to the composition.
In this work, Xu employs the traditional 'xieyi' or 'sketching the idea' style. He focuses on the essence of the subject rather than photographic reproduction. The bird stands in a static pose, yet the fluidity of the ink suggests a latent energy. The negative space surrounding the cormorant is intentional, typical of the literati tradition where the unpainted paper allows the subject to breathe. The calligraphy in the upper left corner provides a rhythmic counterpoint to the visual weight of the bird, grounding the image within the historical context of Chinese ink painting.
Xu Beihong spent significant time in Europe, and his exposure to Western academic training influenced his approach to form and structure. However, he maintained a firm connection to the aesthetic values of his heritage. This piece captures that intersection, presenting a subject that is at once familiar to the Chinese canon and refreshed by a modern sensibility. The subtle application of colour on the beak and feet adds a touch of realism, preventing the work from becoming purely abstract. It is a clear example of his technical discipline, where every stroke serves a purpose in defining the form. The print preserves the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink, offering a faithful reproduction of this classic study.
