A characteristic work by the Cornish mariner-turned-painter Alfred Wallis, featuring his signature flattened perspective and raw, intuitive style.
Alfred Wallis, a former mariner from St Ives, began painting in his late sixties. He lacked formal training, yet his work possesses a directness that attracted the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928. This piece, Cottages in a Wood, St Ives, displays the characteristic features of his output: a rejection of traditional perspective, a limited palette, and the use of scavenged materials such as cardboard boxes.
In this composition, the trees are rendered as dark, vertical masses that dominate the frame. The cottages appear flattened and schematic, placed within the woodland as if they are objects on a shelf rather than structures in space. Wallis often painted from memory or imagination, prioritising the arrangement of shapes over realistic representation. The inclusion of a lone figure with a dog adds a narrative element to the scene, though the scale remains non-naturalistic. The white fence at the base provides a horizontal anchor, contrasting with the heavy, dark verticality of the trees above.
Wallis worked with household paints, often applying them directly to the cardboard surface without priming. This method resulted in a textured, matte finish that is preserved in our high-resolution museum-grade prints. His approach to space is intuitive, often placing objects where they fit best on the available surface rather than where they would logically sit in a three-dimensional environment. This work captures the quiet, isolated atmosphere of the Cornish countryside as perceived by an artist who spent his life observing the world through a lens of practical experience rather than academic theory. The simplicity of the forms and the starkness of the colour choices reflect the raw, unmediated vision that defines his contribution to twentieth-century British art.
