A detailed Flemish engraving depicting the tragic tale of Count Ugolino, based on the narrative from Dante's Inferno.

This engraving by Theodoor Galle depicts the tragic narrative of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, a figure immortalised in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The composition is structured within a diamond frame, a common device in late sixteenth-century printmaking to organise complex allegorical scenes. At the centre, the emaciated figures of Ugolino and his children are confined within the Tower of Famine, a reference to their historical imprisonment in Pisa. The lower portion of the print features a reclining river god, personifying the Arno, which connects the literary subject to the geography of the Pisan conflict.

Galle, a member of the prominent Antwerp printing family, executed this work after a design by Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period, utilising fine cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the sombre atmosphere of the cell. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the scene, drawing directly from the harrowing account of starvation and betrayal found in the Inferno. The surrounding decorative elements, including the smaller vignettes in the corners, expand upon the narrative, showing figures in states of distress and transition.

As a piece of Northern Mannerist art, the work prioritises dramatic tension and anatomical exaggeration over naturalistic proportion. The stark contrast between the light-filled foreground and the shadowed interior of the tower creates a sense of claustrophobia. This print serves as a record of how Renaissance artists interpreted classical and medieval literature through the medium of copperplate engraving. It remains a study in the intersection of print culture, humanist education, and the visual representation of suffering in early modern Europe.
