Theo van Doesburg's *Counter-Composition VII* embodies the De Stijl movement with its geometric abstraction, primary colours, and asymmetrical balance. This work showcases the artist's exploration of pure form and colour.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist, architect, and theorist. He is best known as a founder and leading figure of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; he co-founded the movement's journal, *De Stijl*, in 1917. *Counter-Composition VII* exemplifies De Stijl's core principles. The canvas is rotated 45 degrees, presenting a diamond shape rather than a square. The composition consists of geometric forms, primarily squares and rectangles, rendered in a limited palette of primary colours: red, yellow, and blue, along with black, white, and grey. These elements are arranged asymmetrically, creating a dynamic tension within the composition. The black lines define the boundaries of the coloured planes, further emphasising the geometric structure. The overall effect is one of balance and harmony, achieved through the careful arrangement of simple forms and colours.
