A refined 1789 portrait by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, depicting the Countess of Châtre in a white muslin gown and a large, dark hat.
This portrait depicts Marie-Louise-Emmanuelle de Crussol, Countess of Châtre, captured by the artist in 1789. Vigée Le Brun, a favoured painter of the French aristocracy, employs a sophisticated approach to light and texture in this composition. The subject is seated, holding a small book, which suggests an air of intellectual leisure common in the portraiture of the period. Her attire consists of a white muslin gown, a style popularised by the court, contrasted against a dark, velvet-upholstered chair.
The artist demonstrates her technical skill through the handling of the fabric, particularly the soft folds of the white dress and the dark, structured ribbon at the waist. The large, dark hat, adorned with ribbons, frames the face of the sitter, drawing attention to her direct and calm expression. The background remains dark and relatively indistinct, ensuring the focus remains entirely on the figure.
Vigée Le Brun was known for her ability to balance formal requirements with a sense of naturalism. This work reflects the transition in fashion and taste during the late eighteenth century, moving away from the elaborate artifice of the Rococo towards a more restrained, classical aesthetic. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It remains a clear example of the artist's capacity to render personality and social status through careful observation and refined brushwork.
