A tranquil landscape by French Neo-Impressionist Maximilien Luce, 'Country Scene with Three Houses and Trees' features a cluster of buildings framed by trees, rendered in a muted palette with expressive brushwork.
Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist, known for his paintings, graphic art, and illustrations. He was a prominent figure in the Parisian art scene and a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. Luce's work often depicted urban scenes, industrial landscapes, and scenes of working-class life, reflecting his socialist political views. He employed the pointillist technique, characterised by small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. This method, popularised by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, aimed to achieve a greater degree of luminosity and colour mixing in the viewer's eye. 'Country Scene with Three Houses and Trees' exemplifies Luce's landscape work. The painting presents a view through trees towards a cluster of buildings. The scene is rendered with a muted palette of greens, blues, and whites, creating a tranquil atmosphere. The brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the play of light and shadow on the foliage and buildings. The composition is structured by the trees in the foreground, which frame the buildings in the distance, drawing the viewer's eye into the scene.
