A striking early work by Wassily Kandinsky, featuring a couple on horseback against a dreamlike, pointillist-inspired city backdrop.
Painted during his stay in Sèvres, France, Couple Riding captures a transitional moment in the career of Wassily Kandinsky. The work displays a clear debt to the pointillist technique and the bold, non-naturalistic colour palettes associated with the Fauvist movement. Kandinsky employs a mosaic-like application of paint, particularly visible in the dappled light filtering through the birch trees and the patterned garments of the figures.
The composition is divided into distinct horizontal zones. In the foreground, a couple sits atop a horse, their forms rendered with a decorative, almost folk-art sensibility. The middle ground features a body of water, while the background reveals a distant, dreamlike city skyline. This city, with its onion domes and towers, reflects the artist's nostalgia for the Russian architecture of his youth. The dark, shadowed foreground contrasts with the luminous, jewel-toned city, creating a sense of separation between the intimate figures and the distant, idealised urban space.
Kandinsky uses colour here not to describe reality, but to evoke a specific mood. The deep blues, purples, and blacks of the evening sky and the water provide a heavy, atmospheric backdrop for the brighter, speckled colours of the foliage and the horse's trappings. This approach to colour and form demonstrates his move away from traditional representation toward the abstraction that would define his later work. The painting functions as a bridge between his early romantic, fairy-tale-inspired subjects and the purely non-objective compositions he would develop in Munich. By focusing on the decorative potential of the paint surface, Kandinsky creates a rhythmic, almost musical quality in the arrangement of dots and shapes, prefiguring his later theories on the spiritual resonance of art.
