A refined surimono woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, depicting a formal court hat and robe with delicate pine needle patterns.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman belongs to the genre of surimono, a form of privately commissioned, limited-edition print often exchanged among poets and connoisseurs in Edo-period Japan. Unlike commercial ukiyo-e prints intended for mass distribution, surimono were produced with high-quality materials, including metallic pigments and blind embossing, to demonstrate the sophistication of the patron and the skill of the artist.
The composition features a formal court hat, or kanmuri, resting atop a box, with a court robe draped casually below. The robe is decorated with a delicate pattern of pine needles, a motif associated with longevity and resilience. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the deep black of the hat and the muted red of the garment to contrast against the pale, textured paper. The inclusion of calligraphic text suggests this print was associated with a specific poetry circle, as surimono frequently combined visual imagery with kyoka, a form of humorous or satirical waka poetry.
Shunman was a central figure in the development of the surimono format. His work is noted for its technical precision and its ability to elevate everyday objects into subjects of aesthetic contemplation. The use of blind embossing, or karazuri, on the white fabric of the robe adds a tactile quality to the print, creating subtle shadows that define the folds of the textile. This print reflects the refined tastes of the literati class in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Japan, where the appreciation of subtle allusion and material quality was paramount. The arrangement of the objects is deliberate, suggesting a moment of repose after a formal ceremony, inviting the viewer to consider the presence of the wearer through the remnants of their attire.
