A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei, featuring a court lady in layered robes with calligraphic elements.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicts a court lady in traditional attire, accompanied by an attendant, positioned against a simplified coastal backdrop. Shuntei, a pupil of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was active during the late Edo period. His work often reflects the stylistic conventions of the Katsukawa school, which favoured clear outlines and expressive figures. The composition employs a flat perspective, typical of Ukiyo-e prints, where the figures occupy the foreground while the distant shoreline is suggested through minimal graphic elements.
The lady wears a multi-layered robe, rendered with attention to the patterns and textures of the fabric. Her posture and the inclusion of a folding fan suggest a scene derived from classical literature or theatrical performance, common themes in the prints of this era. The presence of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print integrates the visual image with literary tradition, a standard practice in Japanese printmaking to provide context or poetic accompaniment to the illustration. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones and soft greens to define the environment, allowing the red and patterned garments of the figures to provide visual weight.
Katsukawa Shuntei is known for his depictions of warriors and historical figures, yet this print demonstrates his ability to capture the grace and formality associated with courtly subjects. The print serves as an example of the technical precision achieved by Edo-period artisans, from the initial drawing to the carving of the woodblocks and the final application of pigment. The work invites observation of the balance between the human form and the surrounding space, reflecting the aesthetic priorities of the time.
