A refined Ukiyo-e hanging scroll featuring a courtesan and her attendants, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by two young attendants, known as kamuro. The figures are positioned beneath the sweeping, suggestive form of a willow tree, rendered with minimal ink strokes that contrast with the detailed treatment of the figures. The courtesan wears an elaborate kimono with a geometric pattern, while her attendants are dressed in simpler, yet colourful garments. The composition is balanced by a significant area of calligraphy in the upper section, which provides a literary context to the visual scene.
Unchō, an artist associated with the Ukiyo-e tradition, focuses here on the refined aesthetic of the pleasure quarters. The use of silk as a medium allows for subtle gradations of colour, particularly in the soft pinks and muted tones of the robes. The willow tree, often used in Japanese art to signify grace and flexibility, frames the group, drawing the eye toward the central figure. The calligraphy, executed in a fluid, cursive script, integrates text and image, a common practice in Edo-period scroll painting. This work captures the social hierarchy and fashion of the era, presenting the subjects with a sense of poise and detachment. The mounting of the scroll features a decorative border with a repeating leaf motif, which complements the organic theme of the central painting. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, typical of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. The work remains a representative example of the technical skill and thematic interests prevalent in early nineteenth-century Japanese painting.
