A refined woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicting a courtesan and her young attendant observing a decorative screen, rendered in soft, traditional tones.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei captures a quiet moment between a high-ranking courtesan and her young attendant, known as a kamuro. The figures are positioned around a small, folding screen decorated with a floral motif, which serves as the visual anchor for the composition. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the elaborate hairstyles and the folds of the kimonos, while the muted colour palette relies on soft purples, reds, and earthy tones typical of early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
Shuntei, a student of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was known for his contributions to the ukiyo-e genre, particularly his depictions of actors and figures from the pleasure districts. In this work, the focus remains on the domestic intimacy of the scene. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy in the upper portion of the print provides a poetic context, common in surimono or private commissions of the period. The composition is balanced, with the figures leaning towards the central screen, creating a sense of shared attention. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour layer is carefully registered to build the final image. The subtle textures on the garments and the clean lines of the screen illustrate the refined aesthetic preferences of the Edo period. This piece offers a glimpse into the daily lives of those within the Yoshiwara district, presented with the characteristic grace and stylistic restraint of the Katsukawa school.
