Description

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kaigetsudō Doshin, featuring a standing courtesan rendered with bold, fluid lines and decorative kimono patterns.

This woodblock print by Kaigetsudō Doshin depicts a standing courtesan, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e genre of the Edo period. The Kaigetsudō school, active in the early 18th century, is known for its focus on the beauty of the female form, specifically the courtesans of the Yoshiwara district. The artist employs a bold, calligraphic line to define the figure, prioritising the rhythmic flow of the kimono over anatomical realism.

The composition is dominated by the sweeping curves of the figure's attire. The kimono features a repeating pattern of feathers and braided cords, which adds a decorative quality to the surface of the print. The figure stands in a slight contrapposto, her gaze directed away from the viewer, maintaining a sense of detachment. The lack of a background setting directs all attention to the silhouette and the graphic qualities of the textile design.

Technically, this work represents the early stages of Japanese printmaking, where the focus remained on the strength of the ink line. The print is monochrome, relying on the contrast between the dark, fluid lines and the paper ground to create visual interest. The signature and seals of the artist are present on the right side, confirming the work's origin within the Kaigetsudō studio. This print captures the aesthetic preferences of the urban merchant class in Edo, who sought images that celebrated the fashion and elegance of the pleasure quarters. The emphasis on the outer garment as a canvas for pattern reflects the period's fascination with textile design and the status associated with elaborate dress.
