A serene Ukiyo-e painting depicting a courtesan relaxing on a veranda, surrounded by traditional architectural elements and seasonal cherry blossoms.
This work by Furuyama Moromasa captures a quiet moment within the domestic sphere of the Edo period. The subject, a courtesan, sits upon a wooden veranda, her posture relaxed as she gazes away from the viewer. The composition balances the interior space, defined by tatami mats and a folding screen decorated with ink-wash reeds, against the exterior garden elements. A cherry blossom branch extends into the frame from the right, providing a seasonal marker that contrasts with the structured architecture of the house.
Furuyama Moromasa, a follower of the Hishikawa school, employs the characteristic aesthetic of early Ukiyo-e. The figure is rendered with fluid, controlled lines, and her kimono features a delicate floral pattern that echoes the blossoms in the garden. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft greens, and the subtle application of pigment to define the fabric of the garment. The inclusion of a small tea set on the veranda floor adds a layer of narrative detail, suggesting a pause in the daily routine of the household.
The spatial arrangement is typical of the period, using a combination of flat planes and subtle perspective to create a sense of depth without relying on Western techniques. The circular window behind the figure serves as a geometric counterpoint to the organic shapes of the flowering branch and the seated woman. This print preserves the atmospheric quality of the original silk painting, maintaining the balance between the human subject and the surrounding environment. It offers a glimpse into the refined lifestyle depicted in the art of the floating world, focusing on the grace of the figure and the harmony of the setting.
