A delicate ukiyo-e painting by Nishikawa Sukenobu depicting a courtesan resting with her kitten and a shamisen.
This work by Nishikawa Sukenobu depicts a courtesan in a moment of quiet domesticity. The figure is seated, draped in a patterned kimono with a prominent red undergarment, while she cradles a small kitten against her chest. Beside her lies a shamisen, a three-stringed musical instrument, suggesting a pause in her practice or performance. A small lacquer box, likely containing writing or cosmetic implements, sits on the floor before her. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre, framed by the soft folds of her clothing and the horizontal line of the instrument.
Sukenobu was a prolific artist based in Kyoto, known for his contributions to the development of ukiyo-e, particularly in the genre of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. Unlike the later, more stylised prints of the Edo period, his work often retains a sense of individual character and gentle realism. The use of ink and colour on silk allows for subtle gradations in the fabric of the kimono, particularly the dotted pattern of the outer robe. The artist employs a delicate line quality, typical of his training and his extensive work in book illustration. The background remains neutral, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the woman and the animal. This piece provides a glimpse into the daily life and aesthetic sensibilities of the eighteenth-century urban class in Japan. The inclusion of the shamisen and the writing box points to the accomplishments expected of a high-ranking courtesan, blending artistic skill with personal leisure. The work is a fine example of the refined, narrative-driven style that defined Sukenobu's career.
