Description
Craven in North Yorkshire combines limestone edges with green pastoral valleys, seen here from a rocky height above field walls, scattered farms and the long outline of distant uplands.
Limestone is a defining part of northern Craven, the western North Yorkshire district centred on Skipton. Its calcareous grasslands form an important protected landscape, while dry stone field boundaries reflect the geology and long agricultural use of the surrounding countryside.
A steep pale crag fills the left foreground, topped by a slender stone obelisk. Beyond it, green fields divide into irregular rectangles around scattered farmhouses. A broad, almost flat-topped upland closes the far view. Cream clouds float above the open slopes, and the full green grass suggests summer. Warm light catches the rock faces before falling away into the valley.
