A study of white chrysanthemums by Andres de Santa Maria, featuring expressive brushwork and a warm, ochre-toned background.
Andres de Santa Maria, a central figure in the development of modern art in Colombia, spent much of his career in Europe, where he absorbed the techniques of the French Impressionists. This study of chrysanthemums demonstrates his interest in the interplay of light and texture, moving away from the rigid academic standards of his early training.
The composition focuses on a dense arrangement of white flowers, their petals rendered with thick, expressive brushwork. Santa Maria uses a palette of ochre and deep yellow for the background, which creates a warm, atmospheric contrast against the cool tones of the blooms. The vase sits upon a surface of muted red, grounding the arrangement while allowing the flowers to occupy the majority of the visual space.
His application of paint is tactile and immediate. Rather than smoothing the surface, he leaves visible marks that capture the movement of light across the petals. This approach reflects his engagement with the European avant-garde, particularly the work of artists who prioritised subjective perception over photographic accuracy. The dark, almost gestural foliage provides a structural anchor for the lighter elements, preventing the composition from feeling weightless.
Santa Maria often returned to the theme of the still life throughout his career, using it as a vehicle to experiment with colour theory and light. In this piece, the focus remains on the physical presence of the flowers. The lack of excessive detail allows the viewer to observe the artist's process, from the initial blocking of colour to the final highlights. It is a direct, honest representation of a domestic subject, elevated by a sophisticated understanding of tonal balance and painterly technique.
