Description
Crowhurst Yew fills the foreground with its deeply furrowed trunk and spreading canopy, standing beside the parish church and its graveyard in clear summer light.
The great trunk of Crowhurst Yew dominates the right side of the scene, split into twisting columns of bark around a dark central hollow. Behind it, the church tower rises in pale stone, with pointed-arch openings and a battlemented top. Headstones stand among clipped grass, while sun breaks through the oak-like leaves above the churchyard.
For visitors to Crowhurst Yew, the picture draws attention to the scale of the tree beside the older masonry and the small grave markers at its base. It captures the slow walk through the churchyard, where the tower, foliage and hollow trunk appear together from the path.
