A fourteenth-century Florentine crucifix featuring Christ on the cross, surrounded by saints in quatrefoil terminals, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This painted crucifix is a characteristic example of the Florentine tradition during the mid-fourteenth century. Attributed to the Master of the Orcagnesque Misericordia, the work follows the established iconographic conventions of the period. The central figure of Christ is depicted in a state of suffering, with the body sagging under its own weight, a stylistic shift from the earlier, more rigid Byzantine models. The cross itself is shaped with quatrefoil terminals, which house smaller figures of the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and two Franciscan saints at the top and bottom.
The use of gold leaf provides a luminous background, typical of the devotional art produced in Tuscany at the time. The artist employs a refined application of tempera, focusing on the anatomical details of the torso and the expressive, sorrowful features of the figures in the terminals. The deep blue of the cross provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the gilded surface. This piece reflects the stylistic influence of the Orcagna workshop, known for its precise draughtsmanship and adherence to traditional religious narratives. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer's eye toward the central image of the Crucified Christ. Such works were intended for private or ecclesiastical devotion, serving as a visual aid for prayer and meditation. The preservation of the gold leaf and the clarity of the painted figures allow for a clear view of the technical skill involved in the production of fourteenth-century Italian panel painting. This print captures the texture of the original wood panel and the metallic sheen of the gold, offering a faithful reproduction of this historical religious object.
