A detailed fragment from the Maestà altarpiece by Duccio, capturing a moment of profound human emotion through traditional tempera and gold leaf.
This fragment originates from the Maestà, a monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure of the Sienese School, executed this work between 1308 and 1311. The panel displays the characteristic tempera technique of the period, utilising egg-based binders to create precise, durable layers of colour.
The composition captures a moment of intense emotional gravity. The figures are arranged with a focus on human expression, moving away from the rigid stylisation of earlier Byzantine traditions. The Virgin Mary is depicted in a state of collapse, supported by the holy women, while the figure of Saint John stands to the right. Their garments are rendered with fluid, rhythmic folds that suggest volume beneath the fabric. The use of gold leaf for the halos provides a luminous contrast to the deep pigments of the robes, particularly the saturated reds and the dark, muted blues.
Duccio employs a sophisticated approach to narrative, ensuring that the viewer perceives the psychological weight of the scene. The faces are modelled with subtle gradations of tone, providing a sense of physical presence. This fragment demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with a clear, readable human drama. The crackling of the paint surface, or craquelure, is visible across the panel, providing evidence of its age and the organic nature of the wooden support. As a piece of the larger Maestà, this work represents the shift toward a more naturalistic and emotive style in Italian painting during the early fourteenth century.
