A stark and emotive portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ by American folk painter Horace Pippin. The figure of Christ dominates the composition, his arms outstretched on the cross against a dark background.
Horace Pippin (1888-1946) was an American folk painter known for his depictions of war, historical events, and religious scenes. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Pippin began painting seriously after being wounded in World War I, which affected his right arm. Self-taught, he developed a distinctive style characterised by flat perspectives, simplified forms, and a muted colour palette. His work often reflects his personal experiences and observations of American life, particularly the African American experience. Pippin gained recognition in the 1930s and 1940s, and his paintings are now held in major museum collections. 'Crucifixion' presents a stark and emotive portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The figure of Christ dominates the composition, his arms outstretched on the cross against a dark, almost black background. The body is rendered with a degree of anatomical simplicity, yet the expression on the face conveys suffering. Small details, such as the blood trickling from the wounds, add to the painting's emotional intensity. The overall effect is one of solemnity and contemplation, inviting the viewer to reflect on the religious significance of the scene.
