This wood carving of the Crucifixion is attributed to Michelangelo, dating from around 1492 when the artist was approximately 17 years old. The work depicts the nude body of Christ affixed to the cross. The figure's anatomy is rendered with careful attention to musculature and proportion, characteristic of the Renaissance focus on humanism and classical ideals. The face of Christ is tilted downwards, conveying a sense of suffering and resignation. The cross itself is simple and unadorned, drawing attention to the central figure. Above Christ's head is a plaque with an inscription. The sculpture is rendered in a light-brown wood, set against a plain off-white background, which allows the details of the carving to be clearly seen. The work is a powerful representation of a central scene in Christian theology, rendered by one of the most important artists of the High Renaissance. The sculpture is currently housed in the church of Santo Spirito, Florence.
