This etching by Jusepe de Ribera depicts Cupid whipping a satyr. The dramatic composition and fine lines are characteristic of the artist's Baroque style.
Jusepe de Ribera, a leading painter and printmaker of the Spanish Baroque period, created this etching, 'Cupid Whipping a Satyr'. Ribera, also known as Lo Spagnoletto, spent most of his career in Naples, then part of the Spanish Empire. His work combines Spanish, Italian, and Flemish influences, characterised by tenebrism and naturalism. He drew inspiration from Caravaggio and the masters of the High Renaissance. Ribera's etchings are admired for their technical skill and dramatic compositions. In this print, Cupid, the god of love, is depicted as a winged child, gleefully whipping a satyr, a mythological creature that is part man and part goat. The satyr is tied to a tree trunk, his face contorted in pain. The scene is rendered with fine, precise lines, typical of Ribera's etching technique. The composition is dynamic, with Cupid's figure in motion and the satyr's body twisted in agony. The stark contrast between light and shadow adds to the drama of the scene. The subject matter, a mythological scene with a violent undertone, reflects the Baroque interest in dramatic narratives and human emotion.
