A detailed 1861 woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide depicting a Yokohama curio shop filled with imported goods, set against views of foreign ships.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide, produced in 1861, captures the atmosphere of the treaty port of Yokohama during the Bakumatsu period. As a prominent practitioner of Yokohama-e, Sadahide documented the arrival of foreign vessels and the subsequent influx of imported goods that fascinated the Japanese public. The composition is structured as a triptych, featuring framed views of Western ships at sea, which function as pictorial windows into the changing maritime environment of the era.
In the foreground, the artist depicts the interior of a local shop specialising in foreign curiosities. The shelves display various imported items, including glass bottles and textiles, which were novelties to the local population at the time. The juxtaposition of the expansive, turbulent sea scenes with the domestic, static nature of the shop interior creates a narrative of cultural exchange. Sadahide employs the traditional ukiyo-e aesthetic, yet he incorporates Western-influenced perspective and subject matter to document the rapid modernisation of Japan. The colour palette relies on Prussian blue, a pigment that became synonymous with the period, alongside earthy tones and bold reds used for the flags of the visiting ships. The print serves as a visual record of the curiosity surrounding international trade, reflecting the specific historical moment when Japan began to engage more directly with Western powers. The attention to detail in the rigging of the ships and the specific labelling of goods demonstrates the artist's role as an observer of contemporary life, providing a glimpse into the commercial activity that defined Yokohama as a hub of international contact.
