Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented the flora and fauna of the world with scientific precision. This work, painted during her time in Sarawak, captures the specific textures of the custard apple alongside the native gooseberry and a leaf locust. North worked primarily in oil on board, a medium that allowed her to capture the physical reality of her subjects while maintaining the portability required for her extensive travels.

Her approach to painting was distinct from the typical botanical illustrators of her era.
