A dynamic, expressive lithograph by Lovis Corinth depicting the mythological encounter between Danae and the golden shower of Zeus.
This work by Lovis Corinth depicts the Greek mythological figure Danae, who was imprisoned in a bronze tower by her father, King Acrisius. Zeus visited her in the form of a golden shower, resulting in the birth of Perseus. Corinth, a central figure in German art during the early twentieth century, approaches this classical subject with the raw, gestural energy characteristic of his later period.
The composition focuses on the reclining figure of Danae, rendered with loose, expressive lines that suggest movement and emotional intensity rather than anatomical precision. The golden light, represented by energetic strokes of yellow and ochre, descends upon her, creating a stark contrast against the darker, moody background. Corinth uses a combination of lithographic printing and hand-applied colour to achieve a sense of immediacy. The marks are spontaneous, reflecting his interest in the physical act of drawing and the psychological weight of the narrative.
Unlike the polished, academic interpretations of this myth common in the nineteenth century, Corinth presents a more visceral and subjective experience. The figure is caught in a moment of transformation or divine encounter, with the surrounding space dissolving into abstract colour fields. This print demonstrates his ability to bridge the gap between traditional subject matter and the emerging sensibilities of German Expressionism. The work remains a clear example of his late style, where the focus shifts from descriptive detail to the communication of mood and atmosphere through colour and line.
