"Dance (II)" by Henri Matisse is a Fauvist masterpiece depicting nude figures in motion, characterised by bold colours and simplified forms. This dynamic composition conveys joy and liberation through its rhythmic arrangement.
Henri Matisse's "Dance (II)" is a simplified, large-scale composition featuring five nude figures dancing in a circle. Executed between 1909 and 1910, this painting is part of a series commissioned by Sergei Shchukin to decorate his Moscow mansion. The work is characterised by its bold colour palette and reduction of form, typical of Matisse's Fauvist style. The figures are rendered in a warm, reddish-orange hue, set against a background of vivid blue sky and a simplified green hill. This limited range of colours enhances the painting's visual impact and contributes to its sense of energy and movement. Matisse sought to convey a sense of joy and liberation through the rhythmic arrangement of the dancers. The composition is dynamic, with the figures' poses suggesting continuous motion and connection. The simplified forms and lack of detail focus attention on the overall composition and the emotional expression of the scene. "Dance (II)" is a later version of the original "Dance" (1909), now at MoMA, New York. This second version features some modifications, including a slightly different arrangement of the figures and adjustments to the colour scheme. The painting is housed at The Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.
