A detailed 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting a pair of peasants in a lively, unrefined dance.
This engraving, dated 1514, depicts a pair of peasants caught in a vigorous, unrefined dance. The figures are rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Albrecht Dürer, who was a master of the burin. The man, positioned behind the woman, holds her hand aloft while his other arm is extended, creating a sense of kinetic energy. The woman, wearing a heavy apron and head covering, looks directly toward the viewer with a stoic expression. Her posture is slightly hunched, reflecting the physical toll of rural labour.
Dürer employs fine, controlled lines to define the folds of their garments and the textures of their clothing. The shading is achieved through dense cross-hatching, which provides volume to the figures against the plain background. The date 1514 and Dürer's monogram appear at the top, while the letters AE 12 are visible in the lower right corner. This work belongs to a tradition of depicting peasant life in Northern European art, often focusing on the perceived lack of decorum among the lower classes. The composition is compact, focusing entirely on the interaction between the two dancers. The lack of a detailed setting forces the viewer to concentrate on the physical gestures and the heavy, grounded nature of the subjects. Dürer's ability to capture the weight and movement of the figures demonstrates his deep understanding of human anatomy and his capacity to translate observation into a highly disciplined graphic medium. This print remains a clear example of the artist's skill in small-scale narrative work.
