A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting the biblical scene of Daniel judging the elders.
This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicts the biblical narrative of Daniel judging the elders, a story from the Book of Daniel. The composition is structured around the young Daniel, who sits in a position of authority, gesturing towards the accused elders. The scene is populated by figures in classical drapery and armour, reflecting the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European printmaking during the sixteenth century.
Coornhert, a polymath who worked as an engraver, writer, and philosopher, was instrumental in disseminating the styles of artists such as Maarten van Heemskerck. His technical approach to the copper plate is characterised by precise, rhythmic hatching and cross-hatching, which define the musculature of the figures and the architectural space. The foreground features a seated, bound elder, his posture conveying defeat and resignation, while the background architecture provides a sense of depth and enclosure. The interplay of light and shadow across the drapery folds demonstrates the artist's command of the burin. This work is typical of the period's interest in moralising narratives, where the triumph of wisdom over corruption is presented through a formal, theatrical arrangement of figures. The print serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship found in Dutch printmaking workshops of the era, where biblical themes were frequently translated into visual media for a learned audience.
