A traditional depiction of a Daoist deity and attendants, attributed to the Tang Dynasty master Wu Daozi.
This work depicts a central Daoist figure surrounded by a retinue of attendants and celestial beings. Attributed to the Tang Dynasty master Wu Daozi, the composition reflects the stylistic conventions of early Chinese religious art. The central deity occupies a raised platform, creating a clear hierarchy within the crowded scene. The surrounding figures are arranged in a tiered formation, suggesting depth through their relative placement rather than linear perspective.
The brushwork displays the characteristic fluidity associated with Wu Daozi, whose reputation for dynamic, calligraphic lines earned him the title of Sage of Painting. The ink application is subtle, relying on muted tones to define the forms of the robes and the facial features of the figures. The background features cloud-like motifs, which serve to ground the celestial setting while maintaining a sense of ethereal space. The overall palette is restrained, favouring earth tones and faded pigments that have aged over centuries.
Such paintings were often produced for temple settings or private devotional use. The iconography follows traditional Daoist representations of heavenly courts, where the primary deity is flanked by lesser spirits and officials. The silk support shows signs of age, including darkening and minor pigment loss, which are typical for works of this antiquity. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original, preserving the delicate balance between the central figure and the surrounding group. It provides a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Tang period, where the focus remained on the grace of the line and the spiritual presence of the subject matter.
