A classic ink wash painting by the Japanese monk-painter Sesson Shūkei, depicting the legendary Daoist master Fei Zhangfang in a moment of descent.
This hanging scroll depicts the legendary Daoist figure Fei Zhangfang, a subject frequently explored in East Asian ink painting. Sesson Shūkei, a monk-painter active during the Muromachi period, employs a highly individualistic style that departs from the rigid academic traditions of his contemporaries. The composition focuses on the master as he leaps from a craggy precipice, his form rendered with swift, economical brushwork that captures a sense of suspended motion. A dragon emerges from the mist below, creating a visual connection between the human figure and the supernatural realm.
Sesson was known for his eccentric approach to ink wash techniques. He utilised varying degrees of ink saturation to suggest depth and atmosphere, rather than relying on heavy outlines. The negative space, or ma, plays a functional role in the composition, allowing the viewer to perceive the vastness of the void through which the figure travels. The brushwork is calligraphic, demonstrating the artist's control over the medium. The figure's robes are suggested through minimal, fluid strokes, while the rocky outcrop is defined by sharper, more angular marks. This work reflects the influence of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, where the spontaneity of the brush is seen as a direct expression of the artist's internal state. The scroll format dictates the vertical orientation, guiding the eye from the top of the cliff down toward the dragon, reinforcing the narrative of the master's descent. As a practitioner of the ink wash tradition, Sesson remains a singular figure in Japanese art history, often operating outside the established patronage systems of the capital.
