A refined ink wash painting by Ming Dynasty artist Lu Zhi, depicting a serene mountain retreat in the style of the Yuan master Ni Zan.
Lu Zhi, a prominent member of the Wu School during the Ming Dynasty, produced this work as a stylistic homage to the Yuan master Ni Zan. The composition follows the classic literati format, featuring a sparse arrangement of rocky outcrops, slender trees, and a quiet pavilion. The ink work relies on dry brush strokes to define the textures of the mountains and the skeletal forms of the vegetation.
In accordance with the aesthetic values of the period, the artist prioritises restraint and clarity. The empty space, or void, functions as a physical element of the composition, representing the water and the atmosphere. This technique directs the viewer's eye across the scroll, from the foreground structures to the distant, softly rendered peaks. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top provides context for the scene, grounding the visual experience in the intellectual tradition of the scholar-painter.
Lu Zhi was known for his ability to synthesise the techniques of his predecessors while maintaining a distinct personal touch. His approach to ink wash painting avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a rhythmic application of tone that suggests depth without relying on heavy shading. The work reflects the Daoist ideal of seclusion and harmony with nature, a common theme among the literati who sought refuge from the pressures of official life. The paper surface retains its original quality, allowing the subtle variations in ink density to remain visible. This piece serves as a representative example of the Ming Dynasty's appreciation for historical continuity, where the act of painting was a dialogue with the masters of the past.
