A classic woodcut illustration by Aristide Maillol, depicting a scene from the ancient romance of Daphnis and Chloe with clean, sculptural lines.
This woodcut originates from the 1937 edition of Longus's ancient Greek romance, Daphnis and Chloe, published by Henri Creuzevault. Aristide Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, applied his interest in classical form to the medium of the woodcut. His approach here avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the clarity of the line and the balance of the composition.
The scene depicts the two protagonists in a moment of quiet interaction. Maillol uses a simplified, rhythmic line to define the figures, echoing the aesthetic of Greek vase painting. The background foliage is rendered with minimal strokes, providing a sense of place without distracting from the central figures. The figures themselves possess the rounded, solid quality characteristic of Maillol's sculptural work, translated into a two-dimensional format.
Maillol worked on these illustrations for several years, seeking a harmony between the text and the visual elements. The resulting prints are noted for their restraint and their ability to convey narrative through gesture and posture. By stripping away extraneous ornamentation, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the relationship between the two characters. This print is a fine example of the artist's ability to adapt his classical sensibilities to the graphic arts, maintaining a sense of weight and volume even within the confines of a woodblock print. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface creates a clean, graphic presence suitable for a variety of interior settings.
