A minimalist woodcut by Aristide Maillol from his 1937 series illustrating the ancient Greek romance of Daphnis and Chloe.
This woodcut is a plate from the 1937 edition of Longus's ancient Greek romance, 'Daphnis and Chloe', published by Henri Creuzevault. Aristide Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, approached this project with a desire to strip away unnecessary detail, favouring a return to classical simplicity. The composition relies on clean, unmodulated lines that define the figures of the two lovers against a neutral background.
Maillol's approach to the woodcut medium reflects his sculptural sensibilities. He focuses on the volume and weight of the human form, using minimal shading to suggest the physical interaction between the characters. The scene depicts a moment of pastoral intimacy, rendered with a deliberate lack of artifice. By eschewing complex textures or atmospheric perspective, Maillol allows the viewer to focus on the essential geometry of the figures and the narrative clarity of the gesture.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the Mediterranean tradition, which informed much of his career. The figures possess a timeless quality, reminiscent of Greek vase painting, yet they retain the distinct stylistic signature of early twentieth-century modernism. The print is an example of the collaboration between fine art and book production, where the illustration functions as an integral component of the printed page rather than a decorative addition. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface creates a graphic tension that is characteristic of Maillol's graphic output during this period. His ability to convey emotion through simplified form remains the defining feature of this series.
