A refined woodcut by Aristide Maillol, created for the 1937 edition of the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol depicts the central figures of the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Commissioned by the publisher Henri Kahnweiler, Maillol produced a series of illustrations for the 1937 edition of Longus's tale. The artist, primarily known for his sculpture, applied a similar approach to his graphic work: he prioritised simplified forms, clear outlines, and a sense of volume that echoes his three-dimensional practice.
The composition is contained within a square frame, showing the two figures seated at the base of a large oak tree. The branches of the tree arch over the couple, providing a natural canopy that frames their embrace. Maillol uses a clean, linear style, avoiding unnecessary detail to focus on the physical presence of the figures and the rhythmic patterns of the foliage. The lines are deliberate and steady, reflecting the artist's interest in classical proportions and the harmony between human figures and the natural world.
Maillol's work on this project is recognised for its restraint. By stripping away extraneous ornamentation, he allows the narrative to remain the primary focus. The woodcut technique itself, with its stark contrast between black ink and paper, suits the timeless quality of the story. This print captures a quiet, intimate moment, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey emotion through minimal means. The work is a fine example of the collaboration between literature and visual art in the early twentieth century, where the illustration serves to complement the text without overwhelming the reader's imagination.
