Description

A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Philips Galle depicting the biblical story of David and Bathsheba, illustrating the ninth commandment.

This engraving, produced by Philips Galle after a design by Maerten de Vos, depicts the biblical narrative of King David and Bathsheba. It forms part of a series illustrating the Ten Commandments, specifically addressing the ninth commandment regarding the prohibition of coveting a neighbour's wife. The composition employs a sophisticated use of perspective, dividing the scene into two distinct spatial zones. In the foreground, David and Bathsheba are shown in an intimate interior setting, rendered with the elongated figures and artificial poses characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style. The artist uses precise, controlled lines to define the textures of the clothing, the architectural details of the room, and the play of light across the figures. To the left, through an open doorway, a secondary scene unfolds. This narrative device allows the viewer to observe the broader context of the story, including figures gathered in a distant, elevated space. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides the theological framework for the image, grounding the visual representation in its moral and scriptural source. The work demonstrates the technical proficiency of the Antwerp school of printmaking during the late sixteenth century, where collaboration between designers and engravers was common. The attention to detail, from the coffered ceiling to the specific folds of the drapery, reflects the period's interest in both classical influence and narrative clarity. This print serves as an example of how biblical themes were interpreted through the lens of contemporary artistic conventions, balancing moral instruction with the aesthetic values of the era.
