A fine art print of a medieval illumination from the Très Riches Heures, depicting King David in prayer, rendered in the International Gothic style.
This illumination originates from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a manuscript commissioned by Jean, Duc de Berry, and executed by the Limbourg brothers. The scene depicts King David in a posture of supplication, kneeling before a crowd of figures who represent the evildoers mentioned in the accompanying psalm. Above, a small circular medallion shows the figure of God, observing the scene from the celestial realm.
The composition employs the characteristic aesthetic of the International Gothic style. The figures are rendered with a focus on decorative surface patterns, particularly in the treatment of their garments, which feature heavy folds and rich textures. The background is divided between a patterned, grid-like architectural element and a flat, green foreground, typical of the period's approach to spatial representation. The use of gold leaf, applied to the architectural grid and the halo of the divine figure, provides a luminosity that contrasts with the saturated pigments of the clothing.
The Limbourg brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jean, were active in France during the early fifteenth century. Their work on the Très Riches Heures represents a high point in the tradition of Northern European manuscript illumination. They combined a keen observation of human gesture with a refined, courtly style. The figures in this scene exhibit a variety of headgear and facial expressions, suggesting an interest in individual characterisation within a formalised religious narrative. The palette is dominated by deep blues, rose-pinks, and gold, creating a visual harmony that is balanced by the structured, repetitive nature of the background. This print captures the precision of the original vellum work, allowing for an examination of the fine brushwork and the delicate application of colour that defined the brothers' output.
