A detailed engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II) depicting the biblical scene of David feigning madness before King Achish, based on a design by Maerten de Vos.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II) depicts the biblical narrative of David, who feigns madness to escape the court of King Achish of Gath. The composition is based on a design by the Flemish painter Maerten de Vos. The scene is set within a classical architectural interior, where the enthroned King Achish observes David, who appears in a state of disarray. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and dramatic gestures characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style.
Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The cross-hatching and fine line work create a sense of volume in the drapery and depth within the tiled floor and architectural elements. The scene captures a moment of high tension, with the surrounding courtiers reacting to David's erratic behaviour. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides the scriptural context for the event, drawn from the First Book of Samuel.
As a master of the copperplate, Sadeler was instrumental in disseminating the compositions of contemporary painters across Europe. This work reflects the collaborative nature of print production during the late sixteenth century, where the roles of the inventor, the engraver, and the publisher were distinct. The print offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the period, which favoured complex spatial arrangements and a focus on human emotion within a structured, formal setting. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow, as well as the anatomical detail of the figures. This piece is a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by the Sadeler workshop during their time in Prague and the Low Countries.
