A chiaroscuro woodcut depicting the biblical scene of David playing the harp for a troubled King Saul, rendered with classical precision.
This work depicts the biblical narrative of David soothing King Saul with his harp. Adriaen Thomasz. Key, a painter active in Antwerp, demonstrates his command of composition through this chiaroscuro woodcut. The scene captures the tension between the two figures: David stands to the left, his posture composed as he plays the instrument, while Saul occupies the right, appearing agitated and physically distressed. The artist employs a monochromatic palette to define the forms, using light and shadow to model the musculature of the figures and the folds of their classical garments.
The composition is structured to draw the eye across the interaction. Saul is seated upon an ornate throne, his hand gripping a spear, which reflects his volatile state of mind. A small dog rests near the base of the throne, adding a domestic detail to the otherwise dramatic court scene. The background architecture is suggested through simple lines, keeping the focus on the psychological exchange between the musician and the monarch. The printmaking technique allows for a clear delineation of figures, with the light areas providing a sense of volume against the darker, printed tones.
Key is primarily known for his portraiture, yet this work shows his ability to manage complex multi-figure narratives. The influence of the Italian Renaissance is visible in the treatment of the human form and the classical drapery, adapted here into the Northern European print tradition. The work functions as a study of human emotion, contrasting the calm of the young David with the troubled spirit of the king. It remains a clear example of the technical precision found in sixteenth-century printmaking, where the economy of line and tone creates a coherent visual story.
