A refined eighteenth-century portrait engraving of the Prussian merchant David Splitgerber, executed with technical precision by Georg Friedrich Schmidt.
This portrait depicts David Splitgerber, a prominent Prussian merchant and industrialist, captured in a seated pose that conveys both professional authority and personal ease. Georg Friedrich Schmidt, a master of the burin and needle, employs a sophisticated combination of etching and engraving techniques to render the textures of the subject's attire and the surrounding interior. The sitter is positioned in a high-backed chair, his hand resting upon a table laden with documents, which suggests his active involvement in commerce and administration.
Schmidt demonstrates a high level of technical control in the handling of light and shadow. The drapery behind the sitter and the subtle modelling of his face are achieved through precise cross-hatching and varied line weights. The composition adheres to the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, where the subject is framed by architectural elements such as the panelled wall and the classical column visible in the background. The inclusion of books and papers on the desk serves to characterise Splitgerber as a man of intellect and industry.
The print is a fine example of the reproductive and original printmaking traditions of the period. Schmidt, who spent time in Paris and was influenced by the French school of engraving, brings a refined sensibility to this work. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figure within the space reflect the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth century. The inscription at the base provides biographical details, identifying the sitter and his dates of birth and death, which was a common practice for commemorative portrait prints of the era. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Prussian bourgeoisie, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting status and personal history through the medium of print.
