A dramatic Baroque depiction of David, capturing the victor in a moment of quiet reflection following his encounter with Goliath.
Bernardo Strozzi, a central figure of the Genoese Baroque, presents a theatrical interpretation of the biblical narrative of David and Goliath. This composition focuses on the aftermath of the combat, capturing the youthful victor in a moment of contemplative triumph. Strozzi employs a dramatic use of light, characteristic of the tenebrist influence that permeated Italian painting during the early seventeenth century. The illumination isolates David against a dark, indistinct background, drawing the viewer's attention to the textures of his costume and the metallic sheen of the sword.
David is depicted with a soft, almost feminine facial expression, contrasting with the grim reality of the severed head held firmly in his left hand. The inclusion of the plumed hat adds a sense of contemporary flair, suggesting that Strozzi was less concerned with historical accuracy than with the expressive potential of the figure. His brushwork is fluid and confident, allowing for a tactile quality in the rendering of the fabric folds and the coarse features of Goliath. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the striking red of the feather and the sash, which provide a visual anchor for the composition.
Strozzi spent much of his career in Genoa and later Venice, where he absorbed the influence of Venetian colourists. This work reflects that synthesis: the structural clarity of the Genoese school combined with the atmospheric warmth of the Venetian tradition. The painting avoids excessive gore, choosing instead to explore the psychological state of the protagonist. By placing the figures close to the picture plane, Strozzi invites the viewer into an immediate, personal encounter with the subject. The work remains a fine example of the artist's ability to balance narrative drama with technical precision, creating a compelling study of victory and reflection.
