A portrait by Wallerant Vaillant, 'David with the Head of Goliath' features a young woman holding a sleeping infant, with two other children in the background, set against a dark backdrop.
Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, engraver, and draughtsman, known for his portraits and genre scenes. He was one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, which allowed for rich tonal gradations in prints. Vaillant worked in various European cities, including Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin, and his clientele included members of the French and Dutch aristocracy. This painting depicts a young woman holding a sleeping infant, possibly representing the Virgin Mary with the infant Christ. Two other children stand behind her, one wearing a black hat and the other looking directly at the viewer. The figures are set against a dark background, typical of the Baroque style, which emphasises the contrast between light and shadow. The woman's pale skin and the soft fabric of the infant's swaddling clothes are rendered with careful attention to detail. The overall composition is formal and restrained, reflecting the artistic conventions of the period.
