Vaillant was a versatile artist, working in portraiture, genre scenes, and religious subjects. He is also recognised as one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique. This artwork presents a monochromatic palette, typical of mezzotints, which enhances the dramatic contrast between light and shadow. The image shows a youthful David, his curly hair framing his face, holding Goliath's severed head by the hair. David carries a large sword over his shoulder, a symbol of his victory. The composition is carefully arranged to draw the viewer's eye to the two heads, contrasting the youthful, triumphant David with the grim, defeated Goliath. The dark background intensifies the drama, focusing attention on the figures and their expressions.
