This is the title page for Max Beckmann's portfolio 'Day and Dream', published in New York in 1946. Beckmann (1884-1950) was a German painter, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Classified as a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime, he moved to Amsterdam in 1937. In 1947, he emigrated to the United States. Beckmann is associated with both Expressionism and New Objectivity. His work resists easy categorisation, blending symbolism and figuration with a distinctive personal vision. 'Day and Dream' comprises fifteen lithographs. The title page features a simple, elegant design. The title is prominently displayed in capital letters, followed by the description 'XV Lithographs by Max Beckmann'. A small emblem appears above the publisher's information: 'New York Curt Valentin 1946'. The typography is clean and legible, reflecting the New Objectivity movement's emphasis on clarity and precision. The print's monochromatic palette and balanced composition contribute to its understated aesthetic.
