A dreamlike, Symbolist depiction of the construction of the Argo, featuring classical architecture and a celestial vision.
Antoon Derkinderen, a Dutch artist associated with the Symbolist movement, presents a meditative interpretation of the construction of the Argo. The composition is structured with a clear architectural framework, featuring a classical colonnade that separates the foreground activity from the distant, hazy horizon. The scene focuses on the physical labour of ship construction, yet the atmosphere remains dreamlike and detached from mundane reality.
In the foreground, a figure works on the wooden hull of the vessel, while an older man sits nearby, seemingly lost in contemplation. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by ochre, muted greens, and soft blues, which contributes to the ethereal quality of the work. Above the water, a celestial chariot appears in the clouds, suggesting a divine presence or a mythological vision that transcends the immediate narrative of the shipwrights. The figures are rendered with a deliberate, stylised grace, reflecting the artist's interest in decorative arts and the synthesis of form and idea.
Derkinderen was known for his interest in monumental art and his ability to integrate figures into architectural settings. This work demonstrates his preference for balanced, rhythmic compositions where the human form is harmonised with its environment. The inclusion of the sea and the distant pillars adds a sense of vastness, grounding the mythological subject in a tangible, albeit idealised, space. The painting avoids excessive detail, opting instead for broad, clear shapes that communicate the narrative through gesture and posture. This approach aligns with the broader Symbolist tendency to prioritise mood and suggestion over literal representation, inviting the viewer to engage with the classical myth through a lens of quiet reflection.
