A striking woodcut by Dutch artist Johannes Josephus Aarts, depicting a macabre scene of Death with a severed head, executed in a bold, high-contrast style.
Johannes Josephus Aarts was a Dutch artist known for his technical mastery of graphic media, particularly woodcut and lithography. This work, titled De Dood met afgehakt hoofd, demonstrates his command of high-contrast imagery and the macabre themes common to the Symbolist movement. The composition features a skeletal figure of Death looming over a severed head, rendered with stark, expressive lines that emphasise the grim nature of the subject matter.
Aarts often utilised the woodcut medium to explore existential concerns. The heavy black ink blocks create a sense of depth and shadow, forcing the viewer to focus on the skeletal hands and the hollow gaze of the figures. The lower section of the print includes a decorative cartouche featuring a skull, which provides a formal frame for the central narrative. This inclusion of ornamental elements alongside dark, allegorical figures is characteristic of the artist's approach to printmaking during the early twentieth century.
The print reflects a period when European artists were increasingly drawn to themes of mortality and the subconscious. Aarts avoids unnecessary detail, opting instead for bold, rhythmic cuts that define the forms through light and shadow. The result is a graphic image that communicates its message through direct, unadorned visual language. Collectors of early twentieth-century graphic art will appreciate the precision of the carving and the atmospheric tension present in this piece. It remains a representative example of the Dutch graphic tradition, where technical skill meets dark, philosophical inquiry.
