An eighteenth-century etching depicting a wood turner at work, from the Menselyk Bedryf series documenting traditional Dutch trades.
This etching, titled De Draajer, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century. Cornelis van der Sys captures the turner at work, focusing on the mechanical process of shaping wood on a lathe. The composition is divided between the interior workshop and a glimpse of the exterior street, providing a sense of the artisan's place within the broader urban environment.
The artist employs fine, precise lines to delineate the tools, the wooden components, and the physical posture of the turner. The scene is observational, documenting the specific equipment and techniques employed by woodworkers of the period. The inclusion of text above and below the image, typical of the Menselyk Bedryf series, provides a moralising or descriptive context for the craft, reflecting the period's interest in categorising human labour and social roles. The etching style is characteristic of Dutch printmaking from the era, prioritising clarity and technical accuracy over dramatic flair. The figures are rendered with a focus on their functional movements, while the surrounding workshop is filled with the clutter of production, including shavings on the floor and finished vessels nearby. This work offers a window into the daily life of a seventeenth-century craftsman, preserving the details of a trade that was essential to the material culture of the time. The print remains a valuable record for those interested in the history of technology and the social history of the Dutch Republic.
